Choose a freestanding dual-monitor stand when the desk cannot be clamped or drilled and you can accept a base on the work surface. Search results often mix three different products:
- Shelf-style monitor riser: a platform that lifts monitors while they remain on their original feet.
- Freestanding VESA monitor stand: a weighted base and upright structure that replaces the monitors’ original stands.
- Desk-mounted monitor arm: a structure attached to a desk edge or a through-desk grommet, usually with articulated arms.
This guide compares the second and third types because both directly support the monitors through VESA interfaces. If you only want a shelf under monitors that remain on their original feet, the load, dimensions and adjustment questions are different.

A large base is not automatically bad; it may be the practical solution on a desk with a closed back, thick apron, glass surface or no permission to clamp or drill. A clamp is not automatically space-free; it can conflict with an underside frame, cable tray, wall or rear lip.

Dell’s freestanding MDS19 provides one concrete stand example. Dell lists it for selected 17–27 inch monitors with a VESA mounting interface, a 4.9–13.2 lb load range, 5.12 inches of lift, tilt, limited swivel and 90-degree rotation. Dell gives overall dimensions of 9.65 × 31.50 × 14.96 inches and a product weight of 18.48 lb. Those numbers help a buyer plan the occupied volume and monitor limits, but they apply to this model only.
Ergotron’s LX Dual Stacking Arm with an under-mount C-clamp provides a desk-mounted example. Ergotron lists 7–20 lb per monitor, 75 × 75 and 100 × 100 mm VESA patterns, 13 inches of lift, and a C-clamp for surfaces 0.5–1.26 inches thick. It also specifies rear installation clearance and a limit on the outside display height for certain stacked configurations. Again, these are model-specific constraints, not universal arm specifications.

This is not a winner table. It shows how a freestanding stand can avoid an attachment constraint while an articulated arm can provide a different movement range. Compare the exact models you are considering rather than transferring these limits to unrelated products.
Use the desk-first decision tree
- Can the desk be clamped or drilled? If the lease, employer, manufacturer or desk construction says no, remove clamp/grommet options from the shortlist.
- Is the edge accessible? Measure desktop thickness and inspect the underside for a frame, drawer, apron, cable tray or bevel.
- Is there enough top space for a base? Mark the documented stand dimensions with tape and confirm room for the keyboard, mouse and other work items.
- Do both monitors pass separately? Record each display’s VESA pattern, weight without its original stand and outside dimensions.
- What movement is actually needed? Write down lift, tilt, portrait rotation, forward reach and side-to-side repositioning. Do not pay for motion you will not use or assume a stand provides arm-like reach.
- Check walls and cables. Mock up the farthest planned position, not only the centered position shown in a product photo.

Is a freestanding dual-monitor stand the same as a monitor riser shelf?
No. A freestanding VESA stand replaces the original monitor feet and attaches to the VESA interfaces. A shelf-style riser supports monitors that usually remain on their own stands.
Does a desk-mounted arm always save more desk space?
It often opens the area beneath the monitors, but the clamp, pole, arm sweep and cables still need space. Compare the complete envelope with the base dimensions of a freestanding option.
Can a monitor fit by size but fail by weight?
Yes. Diagonal size, VESA pattern, display-only weight and outside dimensions are separate checks. A screen-size range does not replace the stated weight range.
